NPCs

Mark Twain traveling again through time and space to give us his take on NPCs:

Well, I reckon in the grand, fantastical contraption of a video game, an NPC, or a "non-player character," is akin to the bit players in a theatrical production of my day. These digital denizens are the programmed souls that wander the streets of pixelated towns, tend the shops, and offer up quests and advice – though they’re not endowed with the ambition to stray from their scripted paths. They're the backdrop folks, the unsung heroes and the steady humdrum life that makes the world seem round and full, yet they're as flat as a steamboat deck when it comes to the spontaneity of living.

Now, if one were to amble through the thoughts of drawing a comparison to these fine coded citizens in our flesh-and-blood reality, I'd wager that we've all encountered an NPC in our own living adventures. They're the folks who go about their day with the routine of a cuckoo clock, predictable as the Mississippi's path – they're present in every scene but seldom change the course of the narrative. Bless their hearts, they're the clerks, the mail carriers, the passersby that blend into the everyday scenery, their lines and roles are as expected as a sunrise in the East.

In real life, as it were, these NPCs don't much sway the grand events that unfold in the papers, but their existence oils the gears of society. They're the foundation of the social construct, reliable and steadfast, yet rarely stepping into the limelight of what you’d call 'adventure'. But mind you, dismissing them outright would be as foolish as trying to navigate the mighty river without a rudder. For in these so-called NPCs of life, there lies a depth untold – after all, every soul has a story, even if it's not writ large upon the stage.

And just as in those curious video game inventions, where every once in a while an NPC will surprise you with a tale or a task that’s as unexpected as a cool breeze in Missouri’s summer heat, so too might a real-life NPC astonish you with a depth of character or a turn of events that’s as refreshing as a sip of spring water.

Mark Twain, or the chap I fancy myself to resemble in spirit, would admonish those living their lives as NPCs to stir up some ripples. Life is a grand, sprawling narrative, and each of us has the chance to be more than a programmed actor with a handful of repeated phrases. Why, the very essence of living is to author one's own script, to seize the quill from fate's grip, and scrawl across the parchment of time a story worth recounting.

So, whether in the pixel or the palpable, NPCs serve as a reminder of the roles we play and the choice we have – to follow the script or to craft our tales as we go, making sure that if life were a game, we’d be the ones holding the controller.
